Garrett Ian Shatzer (b. 1980) is a Ph.D. candidate in composition and theory at the University of California at Davis. Holding degrees from the University of Michigan (BFA, Performing Arts Technology – Composition Emphasis) and the University of Miami (MM, Electronic Music Composition; MM, Music Theory), he has also had the privilege of studying at Florida State University (Ph.D. , music theory, incomplete), Paris (composer fellow, European American Musical Alliance), Buenos Aires (composer fellow, Laboratory of Research and Music Production), Melbourne (composer fellow, International Composers’ Competition, Italian Institute of Culture), Rome (private student of Luigi Ceccarelli), and Cleveland (composer fellow, Cleveland Composers’ Recording Institute). His principle composition teachers have included Evan Chambers, Erik Santos, Pablo Ortiz, Ross Bauer, Mika Pelo, and Kurt Rohde, and he has had the privilege of receiving additional lessons with Claude Baker, Narcis Bonet, Francisco Kropfl, and Carlo Forlivesi.

Mr. Shatzer actively pursues collaborations with both proven and up-and-coming performers, and he has been fortunate enough to work with a number of each. His music has been performed by such groups as the Meridian Arts Ensemble, the Empyrean Ensemble, and the Cleveland Contemporary Players. Past commissions include a solo piece for 7-string guitarist Mason Fish, two pieces for Fish’s ensemble, The Mobius Trio, and a song for soprano Ann Moss. Mr. Shatzer’s current commissions include a song for Grammy-winning countertenor Ian Howell, a piece for the UC Davis University Chorus, and a triple concerto for the Erato Piano Trio and the Radio Bucharest Symphony Orchestra.

Originally from Detroit, Mr. Shatzer presently resides in Northern California. After concentrating on popular electronic music for many years, his focus is now exclusively on acoustic compositions. Aside from writing for the concert hall, he has also written/produced music for films, dance clubs, rock and metal bands, hip hop MCs, modern dancers, and theater productions. In addition to his compositional activities, he also conducted reviews and interviews for the electronic dance music publication,, while living in Miami. Also a certified “sports nut,” Mr. Shatzer currently writes sports trivia questions for the online edition of a popular game show.
